Natanael’s 1986 Calio 10 & Aquela Antiga Bicicleta

I am delighted to hear that OTSG is such an inspiration that Natanael has created his own Brazilian version.  Everyone please give a big old ten speed welcome to Aquela Antiga Bicicleta.  If you prefer your 10-speed serenade in Portuguese instead English please pay him visit and even if you don’t, pay him a visit anyway.  Click here for fairly good translation to English via Google.

Warning to OOTSE: Natanael does feature other non-10speed bikes on his site.

As for his bike: This is his 1986 Caloi 10.  Caloi is a Brazilian bicycle manufacturer founded in 1898 by Italian immigrant, Luigi Caloi.   From the looks of it, Caloi no longer offers road bikes in their line, but according to tears for gears, they had had a deal supplying rebadged Eddy Merckx frames for Lotto back in the early 90s.  Any additional information is always welcome.

Hi! My name is Natanael and inspired on your site, I decided to make a little Brazilian version of OTSG called Aquela Antiga Bicicleta (That Old Bike). This Old Ten is mine and it was rescued in 1999.
Thanks and congratulations for the excellent job on OTSG!

Thanks Natanael

Bret’s Fuji Gran Tourer SE

Way back in the early days of the OTSG, March 2008, we featured our first two Fuji Gran Tourers.  Finally, over seven months later, we have another Gran Tourer.  This monster, send in by Bret, is a nice addition to Ben’s and Bill’s.

Bret, I would say this bike is around a 1980 model,  It shares the same components and decal set as Ben’s 1980 with exception of its bar-end shifters and its cable-clamps instead of brazed cable guides.

Just picked this one up today, Fuji Gran Tourer SE is a 12sp. Seems to be all original components as far as I can tell. Have never had one with the shifters at the end of the handlebar tubes. Michelin 700×28c tires mounted on Rigida 700cc rims, Compe-V front derailleur, Fuji-Vx Rear, Sugino Crank. If anyone has any idea what year this bike was produced, the information would be appreciated. This is going to be my daily, as I am giving the Sekai to my son.

Thanks Bret

Jay’s Panasonic DX3000

Jay, owner of the Raleigh Record from last week, has another sub-$20 gem.  This time around it’s a great looking Panasonic DX3000.  Correct me if I’m wrong, but that appears to be an old Kashimax saddle.  I had one very similar on my old SR.

1985 or abouts Panasonic DX3000. All original, I think. $15 Church Sale, its a nice ride.

Thanks Jay

Pop’s Raleigh Capri

Everyone, welcome Pop!  Pop is new to the old 10-speed scene and this Raleigh Capri is his first OTS.  He may be new, but he’s already going about it like veteran OTS owner.  He informs us that his first priority after picking up this beauty off craigs list was to lower the seat (BOS) and mount his Novelty Name Licence Plate! (NNLP)  It really doesn’t get more OTS than that folks.

Just bought this 80s Raleigh Capri on craigslist, my first OTS. All I’ve done to it so far is lowered the seat (I’m short) and added my license plate, so these are the “before” pictures.

Thanks Pop

Eric’s 1985 Schwinn Sprint

Another tragic fate has been avoided, another 10-speed will live to see more miles.  Thanks to the efforts of Eric in Pennsylvania, this 1985 Schwinn Sprint is looking better than ever.

I found this 1985 Schwinn Sprint on a local freecycle.org list. I was told that the individuals from whom I acquired said bicycle had just thrown it in the trash for pickup. Apparently they throw away perfectly good items on a regular basis.

Thanks to this horrible habit, I ended up the recipient of this mid-80’s Taiwanese made Schwinn 10-speed. I already ride a 2007 Schwinn Voyageur GS hybrid for commuting and long distance pleasure rides but found myself wanting a workout bike for strength training. I figured that I’d be able to rebuild it if the frame was tight.

After picking up the bike I took a thorough inventory of what I had, and what would need to be changed and/or adjusted. The whole bike required a through cleaning of all parts first and foremost. The front and rear tubes and tyres needed replacement (27×1 1/4). All of the cabling needed to be replaced and re-lubed. The brakes originally needed adjustment which was accomplished during cable changing. The front and rear derailleurs needed adjustment. The wheels needed to be trued with required extensive work with the spoke wrench. Finally, the chain required oiling.

It was just this morning that I finished the final touches, those being seat re-adjustment and the wrapping of the dropbars with some phat wrap from Specialized. I’d taken a preliminary test drive prior to all of the above changes sans the original tyres and dead tubes being replaced.

After roughly $60.00 worth of total replacement parts and some much needed TLC the Sprint has been reborn and feels like a totally new machine. I live in a fairly hilly area of Pennsylvania (Hilltown, Central Bucks County, PA) and look forward to taking this bike to task against the local terrain. Just shows that one can find an older bicycle and with little money and considerably more time invested, a true gem can be had.

The next project is another donor bike, an AMF Roadmaster Scorcher which I intend to make into a fixed gear just for the experience of doing the conversion.

Keep up the great work with the site, it is always a pleasure to see some of these older 10 speeds still in use and getting attention.
