Robert A’s 1968 Skyway 10-Speed

This is Robert A’s “family heirloom” 1968 Skyway 10-speed.  Undoubtedly an OTSG first.

Attached are photos of my dad’s old Skyway….Yes Skyway 10 Speed. He told me he bought it in 1968 while he was stationed in Thailand. I remember learning to ride on it when I was just a little thing. It has been in storage for at least the past 20 years, hanging from his garage ceiling. I had started replacing the gear and brake cables, but decided to hold up until I purchased some white cable sleeves and keep it as close to the original colors as possible. It has a shimano lark 333 rear derailure, and a suntour front derailure.

Gordon L’s 1988 Ross Adventurer

We’ve had a run of NOSOTS this month.  This is Gordon’s NOS 1988 Ross Adventurer complete with a late ’80s bicycle accessory staple—the frame pouch with integrated carry strap.

1988 Ross Adventurer 27″ brand new

About my bike:

I love to road bike, and I love the old 10 speeds. I ride 20 to 30 miles every day that it’s nice outside. I found this bike at a local Bike Shop in my area. It’s a Ross Adventurer 27 inch 10 speed made in 1988. This bike is brand new. It was up in the storage area of the bike shop still in the box. It had been up there for a long time. You can see the owners manual still tied to the handlebars. I got it home, all setup and ready to go. I rode it about a mile so far and it is solid. No noise, shifts smooth and precise every time, wheels are dead true, brakes perfect. This bike is very lightweight and easy to ride. I will be getting a lot of good miles out of this baby when the weather turns nice again. I took off the triangle bag, because it will make it just a little lighter, and I carry everything I need in a waist pack. The only thing I have added to this are pedals with the toe straps, and a small bike computer. This Ross is Boss.

Thanks Gordon

Edward S’s 1983 Ross Gran Tour

Edward S. sent us this sweet little ‘83 Ross Gran Tour.  Completely shined and freshly shod with some badass Kenda Kross, looking good!

It is a 12-speed. Forgive me. Got this at a yard sale. Poor thing was lying in the grass with no price tag. The derailleurs are Shimano Altus and work great. The biggest problem is with the headset. I can’t get it to quit wobbling without overtightening it.

The frame is made of fancy Japanese “024″ steel.

The front quick-release has a c-shaped opening for the axle. It was intended to allow quick-release without the danger of the wheel popping off if the release loosened. This is a design that Ross patented.

Hugh’s Bicycle Blog is a great place to pick up tips on restoration. My favorite so far is Mother’s Mag and Aluminum Polish. This is fantastic stuff, and will make most of the metal, especially aluminum shine better than new.

Thanks again Ed

Ben’s Fuji Espree 12

Ben H.—of Meteor Lux, Stalker, Aerowind, and who can forget “the Dude” fame—has graciously added another to our wall.  This is his Fuji Espree 12, I don’t know what everyone else thinks, but this doesn’t look like a donor bike to me!

Trash day paid off this past week as I found this nice Fuji road bike leaning against the mailbox. It was dusty, has some paint bubbles and little rust and bad tires, but otherwise seemed very solid. It came from the same neighborhood that the ‘legendary’ Dude.
Cleaned it up a bit, but a set of Kenda gum wall tires on it, lubed things up and fixed the bolt tension on the rear brake caliper and it rides like a dream. It is made from Valite triple butted tubing.

I responded to a Craigslist ad of someone visiting their girlfriend for a few weeks at the University that I work at, and it is currently on loan until October 13th. After that its fate will be determined. The frame and fork may get used as the basis for a ss/fixie with the wheels, cranks and some other parts used to upgrade a CCM mixte I bought earlier this year.
