Happy 4th of July from the OTSG. Everyone is welcome to our backyard barbecue, old 10-Speed style. Our festive friend below is hosting. Just show him your derailers and he’ll let you in for free. Don’t worry, he’s laid back—just like our geometry. Would you like a beer? Sorry, we only have American beer in steel cans. Be sure to grab a pie plate and have piece of Mom’s homemade apple pie before you leave.

Street Seen: BikeSnobNYC Gets In On The OTS Action

The thrill and honor of today’s Street Seen entry ranks right up there with the OTSG being quoted in the New York Times. This is because it was sent in by none other than BikeSnobNYC. Known primarily for his biting wit and hilariously creative references and writing style, he is also (though not openly) a big fan of old 10-speeds. He claims he spotted this ragtag beauty in Brooklyn, but judging from that stem to seat height ratio this could be a ride from his personal collection.

“Seen in Brooklyn.” I love it when they say “10 Speed” on the top tube!

David’s Falcon Black Diamond

We haven’t had a UK entry since Ken’s Elswick Hopper, and this is also the second Falcon in our collection. I like the bike David, but I’m docking you points for no pie plate and giving you bonus points for a Suntour rear derailer.:)

`73 ish falcon black diamond that i call gary francis (probably the previous owner if the peeling sticker on the top tube is anything to go by)

my daily commuter on a 25 mile round trip ever since i bought it about 3 months ago and i`ve replaced a lot of the original parts as a result,

breaking things is a particular skill of mine.

i`m getting really good at fixing things tho and i`ll try and keep my next creaky 10 speed lovely a bit more authentic, except for spoke reflectors anyway, i hate them things

Fixed Gear Trends Floating Our Direction?

It has come to my attention that played out fixed gear trends are now washing up on the shores of Old Ten Speed Island. This Murray sporting a pool noodle top tube pad could be cause for alarm, but I am not so worried. This is indeed a 10-speed, but it’s of the early to mid 90’s Wal-mart mountain bike variety and clearly not an accurate reflection of the old ten speed scene as whole.

Well another interesting OTS showed up behind the library today. This Murray even has the weird red with black drizzle paint job. Like some one overloaded a brush and let the paint just run off in a thin line all over the frame.

The one nod to current fashion is the orange pool noodle used as a top tube pad, on a step through frame no less. Didn’t see the rider so I can’t confirm how short he/she actually is. Enjoy

Bob’s General Rutherford 10-Speed

This General Rutherford, sent in by Bob, appears to be the men’s variant of Tim’s General Mixte. Most often, the 26″ bikes are on the lower end of the quality scale, but this one is certainly the exception. Lugged frame, brazed cable stops and the European bottom bracket are not often found rolling on 26s.

Here’s an old 10 speed General “Rutherford”. Pretty neat little bike with the chromed steel 26 x 1 3/8 wheels and the steel cottered cranks. All decked out in new duds and ready for inspection!

From Bob’s Garage: 1972 Schwinn Super Sport in Baby Blue

Our old friend Bob, for whom Tuesday’s Le Tour III is honorably named, sent in another from his personal collection. This time it is his wife’s Baby Blue ‘72 Super Sport. If Bob is anything like me, I suspect that he acquired this bike under the guise of being for her, so she wouldn’t begin questioning why he needed some many bikes.

Here is my wife’s 1972 Schwinn Super Sport, Baby Blue. Like all Super sports, it is equipped with a serious pie plate, heavy duty SMS’s and a Brooks B-15 saddle. The last picture shows a sneak preview of my next Schwinn, a 1971 Super Sport in Kool Lemon.

John’s Schwinn Le Tour III

It has been suggested by a loyal reader/contributer that I declare June Schwinn Month. I’m not sure about the whole month, but I am going to finish this week with ALL SCHWINNS. Now I expect all you non-Schwinn owners to come out and represent yourselves in July.

Today’s Schwinn adds yet another hue to the rainbow of fruit flavor we have begun to amass with all these Schwinn entries. This Le Tour III, sent in by John of OTiS the Omega fame, mixes old and new very nicely. Some chrome cable clamps on that top tube would be icing on the cake.

Rescued this Le Tour 3 from a decade of neglect. Tore it all apart and added aero brakes, a Felt brand racing saddle and a leftover crank from a Peugeot. Very responsive bike and for it’s age, it is very light weight. This one is named Bob in order to properly honor the winner of last months competition. I see that there were 2 winners but trying to ride that gorgeous Suteki with no pedals is a trick that even I could not pull off.
