JC Higgins 10-Speed

Hi there, trying to get some information on an old bicycle that was my grandfathers…before it goes to the scrap yard;( I really don’t want to let this thing go, but I just don’t know what to do with it. It seems to be pretty sturdy and intact, despite its toasty appearance. According to my grandfather, this was one of the first 10 speeds in the US. He purchased from Sears in late ’59 or 60 in Lakeland, fl – presumably a special order. Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    What size is it, measure from the top of the seat tube to the center of the pedal spindle? Don’t trash it. It’s beautiful.

    I would turn it into a single speed. Get rid of everything what’s not needed, add a single speed freewheel and new wheels. Well, newer wheels. Chop the handlebar to turn it into a bullhorn (much more comfortable), you can keep the brake levers or replace them with new crosstop (recommended). New chain, new tape, new seat maybe. Think of the rust as a paint.
