Benjamin’s Kobe Caprice

Another OTSG first, a Kobe Caprice sent in by Benjamin in California.  Not a lot of info out there about these except, of course, the inescapable Bike Forums thread.

I came across this interesting Japanese ten speed not too long ago. I was unable to find any information about the maker or the brand. Despite being branded as a Kobe model ‘Caprice’ the lugs seem to be identical to those found on some Nishiki and Centurion frames. All around seems to be a quality OTS, Suntour and SR components, and it has by far the most aesthetically appealing decals I’ve ever seen on an Old Ten Speed, even the head badge looks good. When I picked it was missing two wheels. In an act of internationalism I threw on a set of dimpled sidewall Rigida Super Chromix rims laced to Maillard hubs and freewheel which just makes this unusual bike that much stranger. May it ride for decades to come….

    Why doesn’t anyone care about this OTS. I own the exact same (a brother) Kobe (color and all). Pretty decent ride…No one ever knows anything about this bike, including me. Bought mine used in Montana.

    Charley’s bike shope here in Belmont California carried the Kobe Cobra in the mid 70’s. Charley was a great guy and the Cobra was my favorite daily driver for almost ten years. Lost the bike in a move made in the late 80’s. I really miss that bike!
