Doug W’s 1976 Sears Free Spirit
In stark contrast to Francis S’s ’74 Sears Free Spirit, Doug W‘s ’76 Free Spirit is a virtual time capsule of bygone 70′s style cues. Mustard yellow with orange highlights and milk chocolate matching saddle and bar tape scream mid-70s. In fact, I’d love to see this same bike set up in shot on some shag carpet, leaning next to a button-tufted avocado green Davenport!
Here’s this 1976 model Free Spirit rescued from first owner’s back yard in exchange for some spoke repair on his mtn bike. I couldn’t pass up my 2nd Free Spirit to recondition (I submitted a Ted Williams model earlier – won bike of the month). As Sears intended it’s the classic department store 10-speed, rugged and long lasting and heavy. Regreased wheels and crank and head set bearings and some races were worn, but not to worry, just don’t adjust them too tight! Sorry I left off the large triagular reflector in front and wheel reflectors in the pictures. I was just so excited that the tires didn’t split after a mile or two test ride. It’s been passed along to a new owner eager to increase her biking radius from her home. Love your site! Keep up the good work.
Year: 1976
Make: Sears
Model: Free Spirit “27″
Thanks Doug
