I found ANDY T’S 1981 CARLTON RALEIGH COMPETITION on OTS whilst I was working on this.
This bike was bought from a guy on ebay (here’s to you Dave) who was breaking it down for parts as he couldn’t get a decent price for it whole… a real shame!
According to Sheldon’s site the serial of the frame indicates that it was built at the Worksop factory in the second fortnight of June 1982.
I bought the frame and had a long chat with the seller who as it turned out still had the original wheels as well as the campy gears so I bought all of this to keep the parts together. As you can see I have not gone for a complete restoration, rather I have built it up for my needs with modern twists in places. This has been my first project and I am really happy with the result, a lively, responsive, light ride.
I intend to build up new wheels around the original Normandy Hubs as I don’t want to ride them at the moment as they have Weimann concave rims (not tubs, not clinchers but concave!).
The build was troublesome and I learnt a lot about compatibility of parts etc. I have included photos with the email as well as a link to a picasa album. The reason for this is that with my project I looked a lot to what others had done with their competitions to guide me through with parts etc. I have left comments in the picasa album which I hope others will find helpful as there are not that many Competitions on the net for reference.
With any luck this post will repay the help that your website has been for me, love what you have going here… thanks.
Best wishes
