John has been turning out some nice looking bikes all summer, using a nice mix of old and new components–this Schwinn Traveler is no exception. This Traveler represents my first, self-realized interest/obsession (aside from all those other interests and obsessions of a typical 13 year old). GL had just won his second Tour and I was mesmerized by every aspect of cycling—racing, touring, track—I loved it all. I begged my mother to take a trip to the bike shop on our next “trip to town”. There, I gazed at all the beautiful road bikes that were about $800 more than my mother was willing to spend on a bicycle. I did not leave the shop empty-handed, I managed a 1989 Schwinn catalog. In it, a Traveler much like John’s.
That is an early 90’s Schwinn Traveler. Found at the local Salvation Army Store. Took a couple of hours to get it looking good again. This is without a doubt, one of the best riding old bikes I have ever restored. All Shimano Exage brakes and derailleurs. Really unique Biopace Crank. Aero brake levers and clipless pedals combined with its super lightweight frame make it extremely race worthy.
Thanks John
