• Larry B’s 1973 Sekine Medaille SHC

Larry B will be helping us ring in the weekend with this, his 1973 Sekine Medaille SHC.  He mentioned that he bought this bike simple because he liked the pie plate, and that got me thinking (duck!).  Everyday there is some new fixed gear novelty accessory coming out: anodized this, machined that, stupid this, dumb that.  Why don’t we cotters get in on this action?  I’m thinking custom machined and die-cut pie plates a la Sekine!  I’ll be taking pre-orders now.

Picked it up off of Craigslist for $80 because of the ridiculous pie plate.. turns out the frame fits me like a custom build. Built it up retrogrouch style, TA Cyclotouriste cranks, 6sp Deore XT Rear, RX100 brake levers. Kept the original Thunderbird Front, Tourney Centerpull brakes, and yea, the pie plate.

Wasn’t Archimedes who said, “Give me a place to stand and those shift levers, and I will move the earth.”? What a nice bike!

Very nicely done. It looks like it is ready to go anywhere. Are those the fenders with the wood-grain finish?

@ Hugh – The fenders are just Brown plastic Planet Bike. And yea, I use it for everything regardless of its age/cheapness.. loaded it down with 50-odd pounds of gear and went bike camping last week!
