1975 Centurion Super LeMans
A few years ago, I submitted my 48cm Schwinn Traveler. Feeling a bit crunched–I am 6’1″ after all–I decided to ultimately sell my beloved Traveler and upgrade to a more befitting steed. I found this beauty on Craigslist for $60 and have been working on her for the past five months. I replaced the original Suntour VG Luxe rear derailleur, which was completely destroyed when I originally purchased the bike, with a Shimano XT. Furthermore, I re-wrapped the bars with new grip tape and added a rear rack with panniers as well. The panniers are East German cold war era soldier’s backpacks. They were new old stock military surplus and are surprisingly still waterproof. Gluing particle board inside them providing backing and voila–usable panniers. The bike is nearly complete and receives at least 25-40 miles weekly in commuting back and forth to classes. With all additions, the bike is a nimble 35 lbs and each pedal stroke up the hills reminds me of it. Even though she is old, I love this bicycle and hope to ultimately tour or “faire de la randonneur” with her.
Thank you, Neil
