Today’s Sekine was sent in by William P in GA. Originally, William sent me his Sekine configured as a single speed. I told him I’d be happy to post it if he just put some derailers on it. He did just that—not because I told him to of course, but I like to feel I was a significant influence.
Here’s another vintage machine for you to post..
It is a 1973 Qualitat Athena made by Sekine in Japan
This bike was imported by Beacon Cycles when Sekine relocated its plant to Canada in 1974. I have had this bike since then (I was 15) and have ridden it at least 15000 miles since then. I rebuild bikes sometimes – I call my rebuilt machines Qualitat Athena. The bike originally had Sunshine hubs with Ukai epoxy filled tubular rims, Suntour V derailleurs with downtube shifters, Sugino Maxy crank, SR bars and stem and a Fujita Belt leather saddle. I have actually raced this bike in USCF sanctioned races. I’ve got it set up as a singlespeed now – I need to repaint it (for the 4th time!) and will restore the multispeed drivetrain when I reassemble the bike (SR Apex crank, Suntour VGT Luxe derailleurs, thumb shifters). I have started riding again and have put over 1400 miles on this bike this year.
Thanks Bill
