Thanks to Zach in Columbus, Oh Hi Oh, for this OTSG First! This is a mid 70s Roger Riviere Mixte built by Gitane. This Roger Riviere fellow was a potentially prominent historical cycling figure, but he never met his full potential since his racing career was cut short by a wreck on the 14th stage of the 1960 Tour de France.
- A YouTube video of the 1960 Tour and the wreck.
- An interview from another race. (This site has loads of cool old cycling videos.)
- Riviere’s Wikipedia page and the whole sobering story.
Submitted for your approval another otsg first. Here is a roger riviere mixte 5 speed. Craigslist find at $10 Simplex plastic derailleur and down tube shifter. Im assuming the sugino double crank is a replacement for what im guessing probably would have been a stronglite being that its japanese and as there is no boss for a downtube shifter on the other side and also no signs of a front derailleur ever having been mounted. According to to a page i found online the Roger Rivieres were made by Gitane but went out of production in the late 70s. http://www.classicrendezvous.com/France/Roger_Riviere.htm for more info and of course no ots would be complete without cheng sheng gumwalls.
Thanks Zach
