Uncle Sam’s 1981 Schwinn Varsity

Happy 4th of July from the OTSG. Everyone is welcome to our backyard barbecue, old 10-Speed style. Our festive friend below is hosting. Just show him your derailers and he’ll let you in for free. Don’t worry, he’s laid back—just like our geometry. Would you like a beer? Sorry, we only have American beer in steel cans. Be sure to grab a pie plate and have piece of Mom’s homemade apple pie before you leave.

Have a great and safe weekend.

Monday Market - Re-Cycle.com Brings LBS Ownership To The Masses

There is a lot of buzz in the old bike scene these days — spurred on by high gas prices, going green do-gooders(not there is anything wrong with that), the fixed gear phenomenon, the fixed gear backlash, the old 10-speed scene, the old 10-speed backlash and so on — it seems every time you turnaround there is something new with old bikes. One such development is a site called Re-Cycle.com. Re-Cycle is not really a new site(registered in 2004), but I don’t remember seeing the current incarnation until a couple of months ago. Essentially, it is like craigslist and Ebay combined but only features bikes. What’s really cool is that you can register with the site and open up your very own bike shop. Once registered, you can list bikes and bike related merchandise for sale, look down your nose at your customers and be as overpriced as you like — it’s up to you, after all it is your shop. Cities listed so far are: Boston, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, Phoenix, San Diego and San Fransisco. Below, I have saved you some work and found the the best of the best from Re-Cycle.com

From Bob’s Garage: Bob’s 1981 Schwinn Traveler

We have had a rash of Schwinn’s around here lately, but Bob’s 1981 Traveler is certainly the largest Schwinn featured in the OTSG. Unfortunately, this Traveler has been de-speeded. Wisely, Bob kept the derailers, so when the 10-speed trend hits full steam he will be able to reapply the desirable accoutrement.

Bob's 1981 Schwinn Traveler

Here’s the first of my OTS’s. This is a 1981 Schwinn Traveler, which I bought brand new as my first ten-speed. Many miles have gone by on this. Since this photo, I have defaced it and it lives on as a single-speed. I kept everything that came off of it, so it may be reborn as a ten-speed at a later date.

More OTS’s coming. My garage has more pie plates than The Pie Hole.

Thanks Bob

Pants Pants’ Jack Tripper Special a 1981 Schwinn World Sport

Pants Pants Schwinn World Sport

This 1981 Schwinn World Sport makes my heart skip a beat every time I lay eyes on it. This bicycle is the embodiment of my original vision for Old Ten Speed Gallery. It has absolutely everything I look for in a gallery entry. Original and in superb condition, as well as, all the hallmarks of a great old ten-speed, the SMS, the BOS and a bygone accoutrement on ten-speeds of it’s era - foam “wet-it-and-slide-it-on” bar wrap padding!

I would have a hard time finding anything to improve this vintage schwinn from what I can see in picture. If this bike isn’t straight from opening credits of Three’s Company I don’t know what is.
