Monday Market - What Will $75 Buy These Days?

With so many Owner Submitted OTS streaming in lately, I have not done a Monday Market in over a month—I think we’re due.

Summer is officially in full swing and the national average for a gallon of gas has reached $4.10. Appropriately, the average asking price for an “old 10-speed” on Chicago Craigslist is a robust $113.11(as of June 23). Similar to the PistaDex, the price of some old 10-speeds are beginning to eclipse their original MSRP—leaving thrifty cyclists who have relied upon depreciated old ten speeds to feed their hoarding habits in withdrawal.

Are there any good deals on crappy bikes anymore? Well, in today’s edition of Monday Market, I am shopping with only $75 in-hand, and surprisingly, there are still enough old crappy 10-speeds to go around—especially if you live in Ohio.

Street Seen Debut - Bike Rack Hoggin’ Bianchi

Ben (Veloben) had the OTSG in mind with when he snapped these reconnaissance shots of a Bianchi commuter bike parked out side a library. Thanks to Ben, I have now created a new category for submissions–Street Seen is for all you folks out there who take pictures of other people’s bikes. So if you see a good one while your locking up yours, snap a couple shots and send it.

Who does this guy think he is–he’s taking up about a half dozen bike slips with that thing!

Found this recently parked out behind the Library. Unfortunately the shot of the head tube is not good enough to reveal the maker. If it comes back (loan period is three weeks) I’ll get a better photo.

Classic kit, frame tube, light duty rack, light duty lock and modern (relatively) rack bag.

Ben

Thanks Ben

Here is my 1970’s (not sure of the exact year) Bianchi Sprint. The bike has a 1973-74 Campione del Mondo sticker, and was brought to the US from Italy for my father by his mother. After sitting idle for decades, I decided to start using it. After riding it for a year with it’s original Campagnolo downtube shifters and derailleurs, I decided to upgrade to something more uh, reliable. I put a Campagnolo Veloce 10 speed (I know, different kind of 10 speed) brifter system on, out on a Campy Centaur BB, and new Campy derailleurs. I had to put Sakae cranks on with the original engraved Bianchi chainrings, as the original Sugino Maxy’s sat too far inward on the new BB. All the other components are original, including the 3ttt ‘Touriste’ stem and ‘Olympic’ bars, the Bianchi seat, Ambrosio wheels, Regina 5 speed freewheel, and unlabeled hubs. The 10 speed shifters require two ‘clicks’ to shift up on the 5 speed freewheel, and shift down perfectly. This bike it a joy to ride and I ride in Long Island, NY.

Mark, thanks for sending in this beautiful Bianchi.
