Ash’s 80s Sanwa

Today’s OTS, a 1980ish Sanwa sent in by Ash, is another in a recent rush of newly recommissioned commuter mounts. I am happy people are dusting off perfectly serviceable OTS rather than purchasing some over priced, crappy, new bike. To me it’s like buying a purebred dog (or cat) when there are so many perfectly good mutts at the pound. And just like a mutt, there is nothing more faithful or lovable than an old ten speed.

1980-ish Sanwa. was sitting for about 20 years. New tires/tubes and a new seat and handle bar tape, And we are good to go. I added the rack and lock (so it stays mine) ,and so I can take my lunch with me to work. The picture of the handle bars is much newer , I have just installed new brake lever hoods. The Sanwa has been doing very well with its 8 mile daily round trip to work and much more on the weekends. Thanks

Thanks Ash

Andrew’s 1990s Cannondale R3

Andrew in Chicago should be proud to know that his OTS is the first Cannondale entered in the Gallery. This would also make it the first aluminum bike(if you do not count these). The firsts do not end there; Andrew also has the dubious distinction of sending in the first spoke card clad OTS. I suppose that I can overlook the spoke card since he is also sporting the ugliest saddle I have seen since this one.

Hey.
I picked up this Cannondale R3 about two years ago from a guy who used it for triathlons in the 90s. The parts are mostly dated 105 stuffs, except for the random frontwheel, Suntour (I think?) Blaze Cranks, Look Keo Pedals, Nashbar 7075 Road Bars, and a GT Dropnose Seat. I wanted to get a fixed gear for awhile, but then I noticed I was faster than all my friends riding them. They hate it. This bike makes blasting through Chicago traffic a bit less terrifying and a lot more fun. Please disregard the image in my spokes, that is for the folks on BMXBoard. Thanks for the awesome site!

First Report - Melbourne’s Flourishing 10-Speed Scene

Greetings from Melbourne, Australia. We’ve been in Melbourne for four days and we will be leaving this morning for The Great Ocean Road. Before departing, I thought I should report on our experience in this great bike loving city. There are bikes and bicyclists everywhere in this city! I have never seen so many commuters, and more amazingly, nearly all of them observe the traffic signals! I could count on one hand, the number of riders that rolled a red light or stop sign. I could go on all all day about the impressive presence bikes have here, but we have to get on the road, so I won’t. I will close today with some of my Australian 10-speed highlights.
