Fixed Gear Trends Floating Our Direction?

It has come to my attention that played out fixed gear trends are now washing up on the shores of Old Ten Speed Island. This Murray sporting a pool noodle top tube pad could be cause for alarm, but I am not so worried. This is indeed a 10-speed, but it’s of the early to mid 90’s Wal-mart mountain bike variety and clearly not an accurate reflection of the old ten speed scene as whole.

Cameron,

Well another interesting OTS showed up behind the library today. This Murray even has the weird red with black drizzle paint job. Like some one overloaded a brush and let the paint just run off in a thin line all over the frame.

The one nod to current fashion is the orange pool noodle used as a top tube pad, on a step through frame no less. Didn’t see the rider so I can’t confirm how short he/she actually is. Enjoy

Thanks Ben

Tim’s General Sprite Mixte Ten Speed: Reporting For Duty

Tim, of Suteki Track 10 fame, has deployed his General Sprite Mixte for service in the OTSG. This beauty is clearly ready for inspection—exact two-finger width distance between the seat and the seat post collar—drive-side crank arm at a taut 330°—both SMR perfectly positioned at 230°—expertly cleaned, starched and pressed pie plate—freshly spit-shined Vetta saddle—standard issue 27″ x 11/4″ tires and SMS. This is what you expect from a two wheeled soldier of fortune.

Harv Is Back - Harv’s Omega Mixte 10-speed

Harv, our first contributer, is back to show that old-ten-speed-bliss is also available in Dusty Rose. After seeing a couple of his bikes, I can tell Harv a) loves flat bars on road bikes and b) uses any combination of components he has at his disposal. I like it.

Harv's Omega Mixte 10-speed

This is my Omega Mixte. Frame is Chromoly 4130 Lugged Steel. Found abandoned with missing parts and some damage. Front wheel is 27 inch steel Schwinn item, probably from a 60s or 70s ten-speed. Note the “Ross” leather saddle which was given to me circa 1970. Probably just like the original saddle on Deborah’s bike.

First Owner Submitted Entry - Harv’s 1972 Peugeot

I’ve always loved dumpster bikes (I even own one), so it’s appropriate that the first entry I received for OTSG is just that. Harv in California sent me this nicely repurposed 1972 Peugeot which he claims he “Found at the roadside, disassembled, but complete”. My only problem with Harv’s Peugeot is the flat bar he chose for this classic. As I stated in previous post, I am not a big fan of flat bars on road bikes, but this is a personal issue I will explain at a later time. Amazingly, Harv’s Peugeot almost sways me from my long held position on bar appropriateness.
