Old Ten Speed Gallery

With so many Owner Submitted OTS streaming in lately, I have not done a Monday Market in over a month—I think we’re due.

Summer is officially in full swing and the national average for a gallon of gas has reached $4.10. Appropriately, the average asking price for an “old 10-speed” on Chicago Craigslist is a robust $113.11(as of June 23). Similar to the PistaDex, the price of some old 10-speeds are beginning to eclipse their original MSRP—leaving thrifty cyclists who have relied upon depreciated old ten speeds to feed their hoarding habits in withdrawal.

Are there any good deals on crappy bikes anymore? Well, in today’s edition of Monday Market, I am shopping with only $75 in-hand, and surprisingly, there are still enough old crappy 10-speeds to go around—especially if you live in Ohio.

Jared’s Free Spirit 10-speed was slated for posting on Friday, but my pesky employer crippled me with a deadline—so sorry for the delay. Jared, this Free Spirit has some very nice touches—most notably, the giant triangle rear reflector, the 12 inch spoke mounted reflector and the wing nut style front wheel. Good work on a great deal.

Just picked up this old Free Spirit ten speed at a garage sale this weekend for $5. It needed new tires and tubes, a good cleaning, and the wheels could use some truing, but otherwise, it should be back on the road soon!

Bob in Virgina sent in this fine example of pure department store 10-speed.  As Bob points out, this Sears Free Spirit features the original coordinating bar wrap and and matching saddle.  Bob is a re-cyclist like our friend Hugh in Michigan, and is offering this beauty for $100.  I see at least a couple hundred OTS every week for sale on various boards and online classifieds. Most are overpriced and in very questionable condition compared to what Bob and Hugh produce.  If you’re in the market for a new old ten speed make sure you buy from an OTS Specialist (OTSS) and you won’t be sorry.

You may be tired of seeing old free spirits but I thought this one was nice with the original bar tape and matching saddle. Still has all the sparkling chrome and positron shifters, what more could you ask for in a ten speed. I recycle bikes in my area and in the last year have put close to 200 bikes back on the streets where they should be.

Gentlemen, don’t look now, but Valentine’s Day is only 10 days away. I know she probably hasn’t mentioned it, but I’m pretty sure your (girlfriend, wife or otherwise) would really like someone else’s old ten-speed this Valentine’s Day.

Friday’s Found on Flickr is this nice looking Sears Free Spirit Brittany. The owner did a nice job photographing his 10-speed steed. If I didn’t know better I would think this was a shot from the Sears Catalog.
